Macbeth paragraphs

Even though it’s just a fantasy so far, the mere thought of committing murder shakes me up so much that I hardly know who I am anymore. The theme of macbeth is power and corruption. Macbeth is so concerned with becoming king, he loses his mind and gives up everything to get what the witches promised him. The thought of killing King Duncan is corrupting Macbeth and Lady Mavbeth. My ability to act is stifled by my thoughts and speculations, and the only things that matter to me are things that don’t really exist. As Macbeth gets into deeper trouble, he suffers from guilt, and a lot of pressure is put on Lady Macbeth.

You are the best of the cutthroats. Blood and gore is one of the key ideas repeating throughout the whole play, including this scene with the murderers and macbeth. In Act 3 Scene 4, the first murderer uses heavy blood and gore to convince Macbeth that Banquo is dead. Ay, my good lord. Safe in a ditch he bides, With twenty trenchèd gashes on his head. Blood and gore is used to explain murders or scenes in a way that attracts the audience and makes the play more colorful. The murderer's choice of words and exaggeration proves his point about getting the job done. The adult snake lies in the ditch.

Shakespeare uses nature imagery to explain a lot of the happenings in Macbeth metaphorically.  In act 3 scene 4 The first Murderer tells Macbeth that Banquo is dead but Fleance has escaped. Macbeth says:"I had else been perfect, Whole as the marble, founded as the rock, As broad and general as the casing air..." he is using the powers of nature to describe perfection to contrast what actually happened. Half of his plan had worked but the murder of Fleance was needed to cover up his tracks and be completely safe. Nature imagery is a powerful device that makes the play more poetic and 'smart'. Macbeth is almost perfect.

Supernatural happenings are all over Macbeth. In act 3 scene 4, Macbeth is haunted by the ghost of Banquo and tries to convince lady Macbeth of his sight. This is a great scene to prove Macbeth's guilt by showing his supernatural mind to the audience. Macbeth shares his thoughts with Lady Macbeth: "The time has been That, when the brains were out, the man would die, And there an end. But now they rise again With twenty mortal murders on their crowns And push us from our stools." The fear that Macbeth faces about Banquo coming back to life as a ghost shows his guilt to both the guests and the audience, but as the guests don't know that Macbeth killed Banquo it is also dramatic irony. "This is more strange Than such a murder is."

Dramatic irony happens when the audience knows something the characters don't. It is one of the great features of Macbeth that raise tension and get the audience involved. One example of dramatic irony is when King Duncan arrives at Macbeth's castle, and uses nature imagery to describe the friendliness of the castle. This castle hath a pleasant seat. The air Nimbly and sweetly recommends itself Unto our gentle senses. We as the audience know what Macbeth is planning to do to him.

Foil

A 'foil' is a character that follows the same path as the pretagonist but makes different choices. Banquo is the perfect foil for macbeth. Like Macbeth, Banquo is a  general in King Duncan's army, but he doesn't commit regiside. Banquo becomes lesser than Macbeth, and greater. And not so happy, yet much happier. Banquo and Macbeth have different opinions about what the three witches say at the begining of the play. It shows how differently they think about things, including the potentional option of killing Duncan in order to be king. A foil is a character that could be paralell to the main character, yet their choices make them oposite. A foil is a great character to add contrast to the behavior of a character like Macbeth.

Stone Cold

1) Character types:

Link is a growing round character because he experiences a situation that he hasn't before and is aiming to overcome it. He learns about homelessness on his own skin and becomes independent, but he also meets new people that can affect his success.

'The new me. That's what I was thinking. I don't need anyone. Solo and coping, right? Right.'
'You learn, Gail. That's all.'
Page 55-58 he explains what its like to sleep rough
When he starts teaching Gail
When they spy on Shelter
When he learns to tap

I think Louise (gail) is a round character or an archetype. She seems to be a growing character until the very end when she is revealed. Except for writing an article, I don't think Louise has changed too much or grown. It's an everyday thing for her. As 'Gail' she seems to be a growing character but we don't know much about Louise.

I think Vince has an over-the-top characteristic which is being 'evil' but I would call him an archetype because Link also talk about his other characteristics. He's only motive is to knock Link out, who dosn't accept/like having him aroung his mom.

'Vincen't to blame for that'
'He's about fifty for a start, and he's one of those old dudes that wear cool gear and try to act young  and it dosn't work because they've got grey hair and fat bellies and they just make them self's pathetic.'
'Vince likes his ale'
'He's changed her'
'This slob leers and winks...'
'Vince started on at me about living on his money.'
'He locked me out of the house'
'It wasn't even his house'
'...at least he wasn't a boozer'
'...something happened between Carole and Vince.'

2. Stone cold. Link is a young guy who couldn't take his family so he ended up on the streets. His life is spiraling downwards, but he is a growing character. At first, he depended on Ginger, who helped him get started. But later on, he took his life in his own hands, 'the new me' and experienced situations that have teached him lessons. 'You learn, Gail. That's all.' He learned how to tap, sleep rough, find his way around, and how the world of homelessness works. 'If you think sleeping rough's just a matter of finding a dry spot where the fuzz won't move you on and getting you're head down, you're wrong.' He knows all about it. Link's situation isn't a comfortable one, but he is aiming for more and growing along the way. No matter how unfortunate, he is a growing character.

3. 'Stone cold' Link from the book and other rough sleepers in the article have similarities and differences. Neither of them decided to live on the streets, but they're there for different reasons. The article said that many of homeless people in London have health problems that hospitals won't take care of so they end up on the street. Link wasn't forced to live on the streets. He didn't have health problems, he just wanted a new life, away from his family. The article asks the readers to not give money to rough sleepers because they might use it for drugs and alchohl. Link dosn't have any of this in mind, he tries to earn money for food. Both Link and other rough sleepers move from time to time as they don't have a fixed place to live.

'Time Flies' essay

Time Flies

Autumn leaves
Springtime bloom
Summers sun
Gone to soon
Winters comes
An icy blast
Another year
Just flown past

 Say goodbye
 It is time to die
Far in the future
 Believed it was
 Fresh and full of ego
Young not too long ago
Days ignored
Did not stop and appreciate

Now it is too late
 Time to let go
Mind and body
Both say it is so
Terrified?
 Rest easy my friend
Do not be afraid
Your journey is beginning
It is not the end

"It is not the end" Time flies is a powerful imagist poem. It expresses the idea of time by using imagery. Each stanza explains a different aspect of time but as a whole the poem transfers an important message. At the very end of the last stanza, the poet introduces a new view point that changes the main idea of the poem.

The first stanza of this poem is its introduction. The whole poem is about time flying, but the first stanza uses the four seasons to symbolize the different times in life. The idea of the four seasons represents another year passing. Each season has its own characteristic, which is memsioned in the poem and this helps pass on the message of the changes in life. 'Springtime bloom' represents rebirth, 'Autumn leaves' represents the colour change of nature. In this stanza the writer uses 'gone to soon' and 'another year just flown past' to help move along the poem, and introduce a new idea in the next stanza, while still emphasising the main message; time flies.

The second stanza expands the idea of time. It is about the worth of time. The writer explains how he didn't appreciate time when he was 'fresh and full of ego' and wishes he would've. When he was young he thought he had a lot of time 'Days ignored, did not stop and appreciate' but now he knows he dosn't. 'Say goodbye, it is time to die' is telling you that his time had passed. The second stanza leads on to the unexpected message of the last one.

The last stanza is broken into two sections. The first four lines reflect the second stanza because the second stanza tells you 'say goodbye, it is time to die'. Reading the first four lines of the last stanza you feel like its the end, but it proves you wrong by saying 'rest easy my friend, do not be afraid'. At the very end of the poem, the writer tells you 'your journey is begining, it is not the end' changing the whole meaning of the poem. The last stanza uses the idea of the second stanza, but at the same time it changes the way you think about the whole poem.

Haiku

Reflective concrete
The streets in pouring rain
I mourn the long lost moon

This haiku is set in early april, when the moon is blocked by heavy fog and the city turns into a fast flowing river. You can feel the weight of each raindrop hitting your head while you're trotting alone on an empty street. You mourn the moon when you miss the light that gives hope that summer is almost here. Reflective concrete is the illusion created when street lights are reflected on the wet road.
