Foil

A 'foil' is a character that follows the same path as the pretagonist but makes different choices. Banquo is the perfect foil for macbeth. Like Macbeth, Banquo is a  general in King Duncan's army, but he doesn't commit regiside. Banquo becomes lesser than Macbeth, and greater. And not so happy, yet much happier. Banquo and Macbeth have different opinions about what the three witches say at the begining of the play. It shows how differently they think about things, including the potentional option of killing Duncan in order to be king. A foil is a character that could be paralell to the main character, yet their choices make them oposite. A foil is a great character to add contrast to the behavior of a character like Macbeth.
